City Of York Council Partners With Oxygen8 Communications To Implement Mobile Messaging Solution

City of York Council has partnered with Oxygen8 Communications, the global mobile, voice and billing specialist to launch a six-month SMS campaign in a bid to improve tourism and generate revenue. Visitors will be able to text a shortcode and in response receive a text with a link to a podcast; this podcast will then act as an audio tour providing visitors with historical facts and points of interest as they walk around the City’s famous walls.

Toby Brotherton, Business Intelligence Officer at City of York Council, explains, “We looked into numerous ways to improve tourism activity and increase revenue. The mobile phone is now the most cost-effective, convenient method to interact with visitors, so we took the decision to launch a mobile campaign which will enable tourists to access a podcast giving them a tour of the area they’re in. There will be signs placed along the City walls highlighting a designated text code, and when the tourists text the number they will receive a message in return with a link to our website where they can download the podcasts, offering them a wealth of information surrounding the walls.”

Commenting on the decision to partner with Oxygen8, Brotherton says, “We were pleased with Oxygen8’s proven track record for providing mobile solutions for councils. Oxygen8 have taken the time to fully understand our needs and what we want to achieve from the solution and as a result we felt they provided us with a the best solution.”

Brotherton concludes, “We’re really looking forward to rolling out the solution and are eager to see the response from visitors to the City.
