Oxygen8 takes stake in Swipe, the creator of the iPhone App for the TV show ‘The Cube’, enhancing its application development capabilities.
Oxygen8 Group, the international mobile, voice and billing specialist, today announces it has made a strategic investment in Swipe Entertainment, a developer of games, entertainment and leisure apps for devices with touch screens. The investment further augments Oxygen8’s application development capabilities across all mobile platforms and presents its international customer base with new revenue opportunities in the rapidly expanding touch-screen gaming market.
Swipe Entertainment was formed in early 2010 to take advantage of the explosion of casual gaming and the mass penetration of tablet and smart phone devices. Swipe is the creator of the number one selling iPhone App for the TV show ‘The Cube’ hosted by Phillip Schofield. The app was launched at the end of last year and remained the top selling game on the app chart for 10 weeks from launch, keeping FIFA 2011 from the top spot. Swipe creates both its own IP games, as well as games for brand owners and it has quickly built a reputation in the growing tablet gaming space.
Commenting on the decision to invest in Swipe, Shane Leahy, Group CEO at Oxygen8 Communications explains, “The proliferation of touch-screen devices such as the iPhone, Android and iPad, has now opened up the gaming market to a whole new audience. Users of touch-screen devices are increasingly looking for simple, intuitive games which can be played for short periods of time by players with any skill level. Based on the high level of demand we are currently seeing from consumers globally, we believe that the touch-screen casual gaming market represents a fantastic revenue opportunity for our international customer base.”
Leahy continues, “The team at Swipe Entertainment has over 20 years experience in the games industry, and with mobile phone content and technology. This experience has enabled Swipe to gain an in-depth insight into the gaming market, as well as the latest consumer trends and technological developments, meaning that they provide the perfect complement to Oxygen’s core business activities.”
Joe Arkley, Director at Swipe Entertainment comments, “Gaming has been one of the largest entertainment and leisure activities for many years. However despite the huge size of the market games have still largely been consumed by a core audience of predominantly males aged 16 – 24. The Nintendo Wii has certainly played its part in breaking games to a new audience, with the focus now games that are fun, intuitive and easy to use. This has resulted in a large female and more casual gaming audience.”
Arkley concludes, “We have a whole raft of new releases planned over the next few months and we are very excited about the future. We are looking forward to working with Oxygen8, utilising their global reach and mobile expertise to expand our market share and take us into new territories.”
