Mobile phones are taking over our lives.  The evolution of the smartphone has given us instant access to our work and social activities, and people are becoming heavily reliant upon their mobile phones. The mobile statistics below provide an alternative insight into our mobile phone usage:

  • More people own a mobile phone than a toothbrush. (The Mobile Marketing Association of Asia)
  • 50% of teens would rather lose their sense of smell than be without their smartphones. (Intel) 
  • The average UK mobile phone owner spends almost 23 full days per year on their handset. (Mobile Entertainment)
  • There are more mobile phones on the planet than there are TVs. (Jupiter)
  • 37% of adults and 60% of teens are ‘highly addicted’ to their mobile phones (Ofcom)
  • 55-64 year olds and retirees are in the top 5 fasting growing segments among smartphone users. (Nielsen)

A study on smartphone use was commissioned by tech company Jumio in the USA, which included 1,102 participants

  • 55% said they continued to use their handsets behind the wheel. (Jumio)
  • 12% said they checked their mobile whilst in the shower. (Jumio)
  • More than a third said they continually checked their phone at movie theaters. (Jumio)
  • 19% sneakily kept tabs on inboxes and social media sites during religious services. (Jumio)
  • 33% used their smartphone whilst on a dinner date. (Jumio)
  • 32% of parents checked their mobiles during their child’s school functions. (Jumio)
  • Overall, 72% said they were within five feet of their mobile most of the time. (Jumio)

The data below was taken from a survey  of 5,000 mobile phone owners and was conducted by Qualcomm

  • 29% of respondents said their mobile phone is the first and last thing they look at each day
  • 18% of respondents check their mobile device every 30 minutes or less
  • 34% of respondents said they could only go a few hours without their mobile phone
  • 65% of respondents say their mobile device make them better parents
  • 66% of respondents would take their mobile device to work over their lunch
